A forgotten generation in Norwegian painting

"In 2023, it will be 150 years since the painter Kristofer Sinding-Larsen was born. This book is the first overall presentation of the artist. He and several young Nordic colleagues applied for education in Denmark and Italy, in the village of Civita d'Antino. They formed a Danish Italian line in Norwegian and Nordic painting from the 1890s onwards. Kristofer Sinding-Larsen himself declared that Italy was his artistic homeland

From recognition to antagonism

Dyveke Bast follows him and some of his Nordic colleagues from recognition to almost oblivion. The book sheds light on what happened when Norwegian painting came under national, French-founded and monumental domination, represented by the so-calledfresco brothers, the clique around the painter Henrik Sørensen. To this day, the new National Museum shows no pictures of Sinding-Larsen or other Nordic painters from the Danish-Italian line!

About Civita d'Antino and Citadel Island

In 1910, Kristofer Sinding-Larsen initiated an open-air academy on Citadell Island at Stavern after inspiration from his stays in Civita d'Antino. The Nordic artists who were in the city are not forgotten in Italy. Local forces have invited cooperation and reopening for new activity. Dyveke Bast wishes to make a contribution to telling about this part of Nordic cultural life and the contact between artists in the Nordic countries and Italy. Kristofer Sinding-Larsen is a good starting point".
